Castell Gronw (GronwCastle)  

Within the grounds of Pen Y Bont Farmhouse by BalaLake (Llyn Tegid) in Snowdonia. lies the listed ancient monument of Castell Gronw (GronwCastle).  

Castell Gronw is a scheduled ancient monument with CADW (the Welsh Government's historic environment service).   See “Coflein” for the listing. also listed on historicwales. gov. uk and archwilio. org. uk.   The Royal Commission on the Ancient and HistoricalMonuments of Wales lists Castell Gronw as a medieval castle which dates back to approx 1202. Whilst nothing remains of the original 800 year old castle structure. the "Motte" or mound is roughly 20-23m in diameter and some 4. 5m high. with a level summit about 9. 0m across. There is a curving boundary ditch to the south-west which is thought to represent a bailey enclosure roughly 25-35m deep. From the top of the Motte there are fine views over the North end of BalaLake. also across to the charming town of Bala and of the surrounding countryside.

At present the owner allows access to members of the public each year on the 1st March (St David's Day). however there is no obligation on the new owner to continue this practice.      

It has been linked to Gronw Pebyr of Penllyn and as such is shrouded in the mysterious ancient folklore of the tales of the Mabinogion.   The Mabinogion is the title given to a collection of stories collated from medieval Welsh manuscripts. The tale of Blodeuwedd and Gronw Pebyr is told in the Mabinogion. Blodeuwedd is the Welsh goddess of spring created from flowers. and turned into an owl. Read the tale of Blodeuwedd the flower maiden. as told in the fourth of the Four Branches of the Mabinogion. on the website.

During the restoration of Pen Y Bont. an unusual set of dinner plates was found in the loft. bearing a curious pattern which appeared to be flowers around the rim of the plates.   On closer inspection the flowers appeared to resemble owls.   Around this time was also discovered a mysterious painting bearing the image of a beautiful woman. surrounded by flowers but with owls feathers. on the inside door of one of the barns.   Soon after this. images and likenesses of owls started to appear around Castell Gronw and Pen y Bont Farmhouse. We have kept them and added to them over the years. and now there has grown a tradition of discovering how many owls can be found around the house and grounds – the “Pen Y Bont Owl Hunt”.
