Also great as a holiday rental (see comments below) or as a permanent home. as it was when we purchased it. Just about everything you will need is within walking distance! We spent approximately £10. 00 UK Pounds (and many trips to Italy) getting the house furnished and equipped. We are including all of this in the price. except for a few small items we would like to keep.
We have an excellent English caretaker who lives in a nearby village and who would be happy to continue cleaning/changeovers. should you require it. or to just keep an eye on the house. Due to commitments here. we are not able to use the house enough to justify keeping it. We are very sad to be selling.
Location. Between the sea and the mountains! The town of Penne The house is situated within the historic heart of the medieval. walled hilltop town of Penne. nbsp;in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Tucked away down a quiet side street (with very friendly neighbours). nbsp;yet only a 2 min walk from the piazza and a very good range of small shops. restaurants. cafes & pizzerias. There are also a few small museums and a shaded children's play area. Penne is a real gem of a town about 20 mins drive from the Gran Sasso National Park. It is 1437 ft. above sea level. and has it's own lake and WWF Nature Reserve. and is surrounded by wonderful countryside including vineyards and olive groves. A busy market fills the town every Saturday morning. and there is a supermarket and swimming pool just outside the town. There is a good bus service to surrounding towns. and to the city of Pescara where there is a railway station and airport.
The town of Penne is known as the "Town of Bricks" due to it having been built almost entirely in cotto terracotta (which was also used to pave the narrow streets) on the top of four hills. On two of which the medieval centre still rises between the valleys of the Tavo and Fino rivers. To the west. the mountain ridge of the Apennines is visible just a few kilometres away. It is also sometimes called "The City of Art" and in the past was even known as "The Small Siena". There are regular events and festivities. The main festival in August takes place over a few days and is very popular.
The ancient centre of Penne is well preserved. a maze of narrow. cobbled alley ways surrounded by 15th century walls. The main access to the town is particularly picturesque. through the S. Francesco gate (see photo). I Borghi più belli d'Italia is an association of small Italian towns of strong artistic and historical interest. It has chosen 206 "Most beautiful villages in Italy " and Penne is one of them. The Region of Abruzzo. real Italy

It really is one of Italy's most beautiful and unspoilt regions. Not forgetting the cuisine. history. art. pottery. monuments. fantastic architecture. castles. "Little Tibet". ancient traditions and lively festivals. It is also home to the Calderone. which is Europe's most southern glacier.
Geographically is it more of a central than southern region. although ISTAT (the Italian Satistical Authority) consider it part of southern Italy.Skiing (within 1 hours drive) - There are 16 separate Ski areas in Abuzzo. which cater for all levels. The season runs from December to early April. Beaches (40 mins drive) - Abruzzo beaches stretch along 129 km of warm Adriatic coastline. 21 of which have been awarded Blue Flag Status. Sweeping sandy beaches characterise the northern provinces of Abruzzo (one of the nicest is at Pineto where the sandy beach is lined by pine trees). The southern beaches' "piece de resistance" is the old Romanesque fishing town of Vasto with its sandy marina.

"Beautiful house. very clean and well equipped for a restful holiday. Enjoyed the Gran Sasso and the quaint Castel del Monte. The beaches were very enjoyable and the sea was so warm. Penne is such a lovely place with lovely locals. especially the Hairdresser. who said "Hello" every morning! Only tried two restaurants and can recomend both La Grotta for traditional cousine and Giampies for a more modern and relaxed feel. Will miss the morning Italian conversations and church bells. as well as the glorious sunshine. Bar Belvedere and Bar Centrale are brilliant for morning espresso and lunch time snacks.
